CHARLOTTESVILLE–The Charlottesville Cardinals wheelchair basketball team begins its 39th season with a home double header event against the Triangle (NC) Thunder team this Saturday, October 27th at Walton Middle School (4217 Red Hill Road).
The first game will start at 1:00 p.m. with the second game to begin about 2:30 p.m. Admission is free.
The Cardinals begin the season ranked 13th in the country and will face a very talented Triad squad led by their veteran star, Tee Foster.
“The Triangle Thunder are very smart and very good shooters,” said player-coach Tom Vandever. “Our defense will have to be very active and make sure we limit them to only one shot a possession. They’ve already played a couple of games this season so we’ll have to knock the rust off quickly to stay with them.”
The Charlottesville team has also been very busy this October by performing numerous exhibitions at public schools and colleges, including appearances at Dinwiddie High School, Buford Middle School, Radford High School, Fluvanna Middle School, Piedmont Virginia Community College, and the University of Virginia. The team will appear at Wenonah Elementary School in Waynesboro this Thursday as well.
The Cardinals’ program began in the fall of 1979 and the team first competed in the 1980-81 season.
