EDINBORO, PA–The Charlottesville Cardinals wheelchair basketball team went 5-2 and claimed 2nd place at the ‘Boro Shootout Tournament at the University of Pennsylvania–Edinboro this past weekend.
The Cardinals went 4-1 in the round-robin portion of the tournament, defeating the Rochester (NY) Wheels, 69-29, the London (Canada) Flyers, 64-30, the Richmond (VA) Sportable Rimriders, 63-26, and the Brooklyn (NY) Nets, 58-21. Charlottesville lost to the host Edinboro Scots squad in the round-robin match, 59-36.
In the semi-final round the Cardinals again downed the London Flyers, this time 58-35, setting up the rematch with Edinboro in the championship game.
The Cardinals jumped to a 6-2 lead early in the game but Edinboro tied the game at 14-all with seven minutes left in the half before ripping off a 12-0 run to take a 26-14 edge at halftime. Charlottesville battled back in the second half and cut the margin to six points with only four minutes left to play but couldn’t get any closer, finally bowing to Edinboro 45-37.
Charlottesville will be in action again the weekend of December 1st and 2nd in Charlottesville as they host their annual Herman Key, Jr. Memorial Holiday Tournament at Walton Middle School
