RICHMOND, VA–The #9-ranked Charlottesville Cardinals wheelchair basketball team went 4-1 last weekend, claiming 3rd place in the NWBA Pre-season National Invitational Tournament held at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.
In the round-robin bracket competition the Cardinals defeated the #2-ranked San Antonio Spurs, 51-42, the #10-ranked Philadelphia Magee Sixers, 56-27, and the #3-ranked Nassau Kings.
The Cardinals faltered in the semi-final round and fell to the #8-ranked Charlotte Rollin’ Bobcats, 53-49, before rebounding in the 3rd place game by knocking off the #5-ranked Ft. Lauderdale Sharks.
In the championship game the Nassau Kings edged the Charlotte squad, 55-48, to take first place.
The Cardinals’ Brandon Rush was named to the All-Tournament team. Rush notched three 20-point games and averaged 14 points per game during the tournament.
