CHARLOTTESVILLE–The Charlottesville Cardinals wheelchair basketball team knocked off the Richmond Rimriders, 65-39, in the opening game of the 12th Annual Herman Key, Jr. Memorial Holiday Tournament on Friday night.

In the first half the Cardinals struggled against a very scrappy Richmond squad before squeezing out a narrow 26-21 halftime edge.  Richmond kept up the pressure behind the shooting of Tim Moubray and Mickey Morin and cut the margin to 32-29 with 15 minutes to play.

But Charlottesville cranked up their defense pressure and launched a 14-2 run to seize control of the game at 46-31 with six minutes left, ultimately winning 65-39.  The Cardinals’ Mike Looney led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Chris Robinson with 20 and Eddie Wimbish with 10.  Mickey Morin led Richmond scorers with 16.

In the second game of the night the 8th-ranked Shepherd Stealers put away the Maryland Ravens, 66-34 paced by Gavin Cloy’s 18 points.  The final match of the evening saw the Bay City Thunder down the Charlotte Rollin’ Bobcats, 59-34, as Trevon Jenifer poured in 21-points for the Thunder.

Games continue on Saturday and Sunday at Covenant Church gym and Burley Middle School gym on Saturday, and at Burley on Sunday.

The Cardinals will be at Burley all day Saturday, facing the Maryland Ravens at 10:30 a.m., the Bay City Thunder at 1:00 p.m., and the Charlotte Bobcats at 4:00 p.m.
