PHILADELPHIA–The Charlottesville Cardinals wheelchair basketball team knocked off the University of Pennsylvania–Edinboro men’s team, 69-42, in their first game at the Carousel House Tournament in Philadelphia this evening.
The 15th-ranked Cardinals handled the full court pressure defense of the young and aggressive Edinboro squad and posted a ten point advantage at halftime, 31-21. Charlottesville opened the second half with an 10-4 run and maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Cardinals’ Mike Looney led all scorers with 27 points, while Chris Robinson added 16 and Brandon Rush had 11 for Charlottesville. Looney, Robinson, and Rush are all alumni of the Edinboro collegiate wheelchair basketball program.
The Cardinals are now 19-12 on the season and will face the 14th-ranked New York Rollin’ Knicks on Saturday morning. The Knicks downed the 7th-ranked Bay City (Erie, PA) Thunder in Friday’s other tournament match up. Charlottesville will complete the round-robin portion of the tournament Saturday afternoon when they tangle with the Bay City team.
