EDINBORO,PA–The Charlottesville Cardinals wheelchair basketball team went 2-1 in the first day of the 2014 “Boro Shootout” sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania–Edinboro.
Charlottesville split games with the host Edinboro Scots, falling in the morning match 47-39 but then rebounding to win the second game in the early afternoon 60-52. Saturday evening the Cardinals notched their second victory of the day against the New Jersey Keystone Royals, 51-38.
In the morning 9:00 a.m. tilt against Edinboro, the Cardinals’ offense never woke up as Charlottesville managed a paltry 14 points in the first half and trailed 27-14 at the half. The Cardinals mounted several rallies in the second half but could never cut the margin below seven points as the Edinboro squad claimed a 47-39 win. The Cardinals’ Arthur Tracy led all scorer with 22 points, followed by Tom Vandever with 10, Brandon Rush with 3, and Chris Robinson and Jeremy Smith with 2 each. Edinboro’s Blake Rush (from Richmond, VA) chipped in 10 points for the victors.
After regrouping, the Cardinals tangled a second time with Edinboro in a high noon showdown. Charlottesville built a seven point lead in the first eight minutes of the game but the scrappy Edinboro team rallied to claim a 27-25 halftime edge. In the second half the Cardinals continued to score effectively and took the lead for good with 13 minutes left in the game, eventually winning 60-52. Arthur Tracy again led Cardinals’ scorers with 17 points, followed by Tom Vandever with 13, Chris Robinson and Jeremy Smith with 8 apiece, Brandon Rush with 6, Eddie Wimbish with 4, and Andrea Woodson-Smith with 2.
In the final game of the day the Cardinals met a hot-shooting Keystone Royals. Charlottesville stretched an early lead to 10 points in the first half before the Royals cut the deficit to 27-24 at the break. The Cardinals defense asserted itself in the second half, holding Keystone to 14 points and notched a 51-38 win. Arthur Tracy led Charlottesville scorers with 17 points, followed by Tom Vandever with 11, Brandon Rush with 9, Jeremy Smith with 6, Andrea Woodson-Smith with 4, and Joey Leavitt and Chris Robinson with 2 each.
The Cardinals will face Keystone again at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning and will play an additional game later in the day.
