CHARLOTTESVILLE–The Charlottesville Cardinals wheelchair basketball will hit the road early Thursday morning en route to Birmingham, Alabama to compete in the annual Pioneer Tournament.
The 14th-ranked Cardinals will have their work cut out for them as they open against the 8th-ranked Atlanta Shepherd Stealers on Friday afternoon. Friday evening Charlottesville will square off against defending national intercollegiate champion University of Alabama.
The 1st-ranked Dallas Movin’ Mavericks, the University of Texas-Arlington, and the University of Missouri are also part of the very tough tournament field.
The Cardinals will also be without veterans Eddie Wimbish, Arthur Tracy, Cort Thomas, and Andrea Woodson-Smith this weekend.
“We’ll miss the extra height this trip but we’ll still be bringing a strong and scrappy squad to Birmingham,” said coach Tom Vandever.
