Charlottesville Cardinals Roll to Victory in Season Opener
CHARLOTTE–The Charlottesville Cardinals grabbed a win in their first outing of the 2012-2013 season by downing the Charlotte Rollin’ Bobcats 65-54 this past Saturday.
In the season debut for both clubs, the Cardinals jumped to an early lead behind Mike Looney’s 12 first half points and entered the halftime break with an eight-point margin after controlling the first 20 minutes of play.
Early in the second half Charlottesville repeatedly broke the Bobcat press to extend their lead to 17 but the Bobcats’ Mike Hudson poured in a game-high 24 points to keep Charlotte within striking range.
When the Cardinals’ Brandon Rush fouled out with six minutes remaining the Bobcats mounted a rally and cut Charlottesville’s margin to eight points with a little over three minutes to play. Late game foul shots by Looney, Eddie Wimbish, and Tom Vandever stretched the Cardinals’ lead back to 12 points with just a minute to play and the Cardinals notched a hard fought win.
Cardinals’ scorers were led by Mike Looney who had 21 points, followed by Tom Vandever with 14 and Brandon Rush with 13. Charlotte’s Mike Hudson led all scorers with 24.
The 14th ranked Cardinals are now 1-0 on the season and will face Charlotte again on October 13th in Charlottesville. The Cardinals will play a double-header against the Bobcats starting a 2:00 p.m. at Walker Middle School.
