CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA–The Charlottesville Cardinals wheelchair basketball team finished third in the eight-team field at the 2015 Herman Key, Jr. Memorial Holiday Tournament this weekend.
The 18th-ranked Cardinals opened the tournament Friday night with a 75-62 victory over the 5th-ranked Atlanta Shepherd Stealers but stumbled in their remaining round-robin matches on Saturday. Charlottesville dropped two tough contests to #16 Miami Heat Wheels and to #8 Bay City Thunder before notching a 64-58 win against the Carolina Tar Wheels in the quarter-finals.
In Sunday morning’s semi-final game the Cardinals faced the Bay City squad and again fell to the Pennsylvania squad, this time 56-44.
Charlottesville faced the Shepherd Stealers in the bronze medal game and claimed the victory 54-49.
In the championship game Bay City knocked off Miami 61-57.
The Cardinals’ Mike Looney and Jacob Tyree were named to the all-tournament team. Bay City’s Trevon Jenifer won the Most Valuable Player award and the Virginia Sun Wheelers team were presented with the James “Rick” Shifflett Sportsmanship Award.
